The Nanostructured Polymeric Membranes (NPM) Laboratory at KAUST is pleased to announce that the BioHtoO team has been selected as a semifinalist to advance in the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition, one of the world's leading innovation challenges focused on advancing sustainable desalination technologies.
Led by Dr. Maria Di Vincenzo, Research Scientist in the NPM Laboratory, the team includes Prof. Suzana Nunes (NPM, KAUST), Prof. Alberto Tiraferri (en.sur.e water lab, Politecnico di Torino), Dr. Xiang Li (Imperial College London), together with collaborators from BIOHTOO (Beijing) Nanotechnology Co., Ltd., the Specialty Polymers Research Center (Y-Lab), and the Green Separation Technology Lab in China.
BioHtoO is one of only 17 teams worldwide selected to advance in Track B – Novel Materials and Methods. The team's technology is based on bioinspired thin-film nanocomposite membranes incorporating supramolecular water channels designed to improve water transport while maintaining excellent salt rejection.
This achievement recognizes several years of research and development within the NPM Laboratory and highlights the potential of the technology to contribute to more energy-efficient seawater desalination. The team is now preparing for the next phase of testing and validation as part of the competition
The NPM Laboratory congratulates all team members and collaborators on this important achievement and looks forward to the next stages of the competition.
